Kongo performing the song “Bonswa Bonswa” (below), a celebratory salutation for the queen in the kingdom of Kongo, at the Lincoln Center-La Casita Outdoors Festival in the summer of 2005. The majority of the Africans who were brought as slaves to Haiti were uprooted from the coast of West Africa and the Kongo Basin in Central Africa.
